GABIGOL WINS 2017 BIDONE D’OR

Gabriel Barbosa has been awarded the ‘Bidone d’Or’ which is the worst player in the Serie A for the 2017 season. The Brazilian joined Inter Milan back in 2016. He attracted interests from numerous sides but he preferred to join Inter.

Gabigol had a frustrating time since joining, featuring only nine times for the club. He was eventually sent on loan to Portuguese side Benfica at the end of last season. He has also struggled with expectations in Portugal, playing just once.

Juan Iturbe and Thomas Vermaelen were other prospects to receive the Golden Bin award but Gabigol’s struggles despite huge expectations when he arrived at Italy earned him the Bidone d’Oro.

Iturbe played the 2015/16 season in the Premier League for Bournemouth after both sides agreed to a loan deal. He had joined Roma a year earlier and was expected to strengthen the side as they made a push for the Scudetto. He could not meet expectations so he had to go out on loan, and then loaned out again.

Vermaelen left Arsenal for Barcelona on a high but he could not hold down a shirt at the Nou Camp. Roma waded in with the hope of turning things around but the Belgian started out with a red card on his debut. He could not fit in and then his injury woes kept him out for long. He was set to win the award but Gabigol beat him to it.

Gabigol joins the likes of Rivaldo, Adriano, Ricardo Quaresma, Diego Milito, Edin Dzeko and others who have picked up the ‘honour.’ He is the seventh Inter player to achieve this, making it more of a pattern for the club. He can turn things around though as Dzeko emerged the top goal scorer in the league after only being named the worst player a year earlier.
